Enough is Enough

My mother gave me this carving after we had lived in Bangkok, Thailand. I saw a huge Reclining Buddha statue there in the jungles, representing his readiness and contentment for he served his life purpose well and was ready for transition.
I was once that former executive in the corporate world focused on nothing less than "operational excellence". This meant my performance and others as well. I remember my mentors clearly. They demanded a lot and I grew from their expectations. Never resting, but honestly, I was always stressed as it never seemed to be enough.
Eventually I found my own style balancing the demands they set with taking time to recognize my team and celebrate our accomplishments. Instead, noticing how well we influenced others positively, achieving realistic goals we all agreed upon. My staff retention and morale was generally high. I enjoyed my job more and work became a more happy and lighter place for all.
When we are always looking for what's not right and wanting more, do we get to savor the precious moments? The little success stories, simple and subtle moments of peace, contentment knowing we have and are...well, enough. Santosha, another Niyama in yoga philosophy is practicing the sincere feeling that we are satisfied, have enough, content without heavy and ongoing demands for more.
As long as we have pure intention and actions to deliver our best,
Oscar Wilde, an author, poet and playwright in the late 1800s sums up Santosha for me
"Two men look out a window. One sees the mud, the other sees the stars."
"True contentment is not having everything, but being satisfied with everything you have."

Contentment in pure form distinguishes your general outlook on life, what you have, or have not. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive to do better as those are actions. It's more knowing if we give our best, we gain acceptance of the things we cannot control then our perspective and response in turn finds gratitude and Santosha. We have and are enough.
More satisfied and content being enough,
