Upside Down is Good!

Last week we focused on Balance, this week is all about being ok Upside Down. In a yoga practice it is called an Inversion. We get our heads below our hearts to any degree and work with gravity to shift our weight, the flow of energy and circulation for our body's cells and fluids. This movement helps us detox and restore as stagnant areas are released from the pull of gravity that is stronger than the heart, and then rinsed and restored when we return to our neutral positions.

Inversions may be gentle, like Puppy Pose, Legs Up the Wall, to Downward Facing Dog, Forward Fold, or amplified with a Shouder Stand, Headstand or Handstand. They are all great poses to get things moving in a different direction and stimulate our bodies to circulate prana. Numerous studies report that improved oxygen flow to our organs including our brain and skin, and the release of toxins and stagnant fluids has enormous benefits. Improved brain function, skin tone, back pain and even heart relief from reversing the pull of gravity. They strengthen our muscles including our core and enhance our immunity. They may be energizing and yet calming.

Want to add some balance too? Try a Standing Split, then let go of your ankle with one hand, then maybe the other! A more challenging inversion should have assistance like a "spotter" to help support you, props are amazing tools also. Eye pressure issues or uncontrolled blood pressure are contraindications to having your head below your heart level. Modify accordingly and consider gentler version with menstruation and pregnancy. Our teachers can guide you.

See you on the other side from the earth's view!

With love and gratitude,
