Seva and Serenity, Calm After the Storm
You know the phrase, the calm before the storm, the quiet before a disturbance. We now need the Calm AFTER the Storm. We have tools to help us navigate and respond best before, during and after the storms of life.
Hurricane Helene is one of those major life-changing disturbances. As an empath, I feel deep emotions for others suffering. My heart hurts. I have learned about healthier reactions that are within my control. If I pause long enough and breathe, I am able to worry less and do something positive instead.
A year ago I signed up for a 20-mile hike in October in western North Carolina, my go-to for forest bathing in nature. I am adjusting my course if able and hope to instead perform Seva, acts of service, devotion without any reciprocal exchange. Seva can be any caring act that helps another. Maybe it's what I refer to as a "care call", a donation or volunteering, those trail boots on the ground in some way.
I found this coffee mug rolling in the surf on a beach walk with my son, no one else in sight, months after my husband died. I knew it was meant for us, a sign for healing. I feel more calm when I practice the Serenity Prayer. It guides me in life to find Serenity to Accept what I cannot change, Courage to Change what I can, and Wisdom to know the difference. I cannot change what happened, I have courage to do what I can with Seva, and will be wise to look at the big picture to evaluate what's best for a realistic plan of action. This brings me some calmness as I remind myself of this powerful message.
We send support, love and intentions for the healing journey for so many affected by tragedies like last week. Please see the link below to send aid to American Red Cross (ARC) for donation. Clara Burton, a nurse during the American Civil War, founded this strong charity that was fundamental after Hurricane Ian affected us in 2022. Kindly consider any contribution or volunteering as able.
