What’s a Love Gift?
Wonderful heart-warming gifts from our students, Rosemarie and Laurie with a variety of items reflecting what I love in life. They included beautiful personal notes and of course, a hug.
Gift Giving & Receiving is one of the most misunderstood of the 5 Love Languages, often thought of as materialistic. But, when a gift is given with intention to demonstrate love, it can be a tangible way to show love without struggling for words or physical touch, a challenge for some.
Personal thought and effort behind the gift’s creation are a powerful statement of affection. Add the element of surprise for even more fun love. The gift giver finds joy in expressing love through the gift, a win-win situation.
A gift need not be expensive. I remember my mom telling me to make her something and save my money. For me, I saved my allowance and wanted to show my love with a gift for her. For her, the Act of Service while sparing me the cost was what she appreciated, and how she showed her love for me. I eventually gained the same perspective so a special thought out gift melts my heart.
My last birthday taught me a lot about being more comfortable receiving gifts (a challenge for me). I see the big picture now as some included ALL five Love Languages with handwritten notes, hugs and clearly effort in choosing my gift. I felt really loved. A flower, a cookie, a handmade gift I have now learned to surrender to, as it's a love expression from the giver.
Holiday seasons are great opportunities to share Love Gifts. Put in some effort (act of service), quality time to present it, add some words of affirmation and you've covered four Love Languages. Next week we explore Physical Touch as a hug will top of a gift with our fifth Love Language.
